Glenmary School is very proud of Mrs. Coen's Religion 25 class who spearheaded the Helping Hands Healing Hearts Initiative.
After the Kamloops discovery, students in Religion 25, who were just starting a unit on Indigenous Spirituality, reached out to Mrs. Coen with ideas of being able to do something to help. After some class discussions, they decided they wanted to honour the students of the St. Augustine Mission on Shaftsbury Trail.
The Peace River Museum and Peace River Aboriginal Interagency Committee are working together to do this very thing, so the funds raised are going to help with signage at the Monument here in Peace River where it is more accessible for people to learn about the Indigenous history of Peace River.
Their goal was to raise $430, a dollar donation for each Handprint on the walls of Glenmary. Our school surpassed this goal, raising just over $490. Also, Mr. Andy Gullion, a friend from Rainbow Lake heard about the project, and donated $430 in memory of his mother and aunt, Anne Gullion and Juliette Turk (nee Ghostkeeper), who attended the St. Marten's Residential School in Wabasca from 1927-1933.
Thank you to the Glenmary School community and Mr. Andy Gullion for your generous support. We look forward to seeing the signage at the Treaty 8 Monument in Peace River....
