HFCRD Introduces Division-Wide School Calendar

  Posted: March 19, 2014

The Holy Family Catholic Regional Division (HFCRD) Board of Trustees approved in principle the 2014/2015 school calendar at the March 18th Regular Board Meeting.  This unique school calendar is the first time all HFCRD schools will share the same schedule.  This decision was made in response to our division-wide survey asking what impacts our teachers’ efficacy and the overwhelming response was to increase collaboration and prep time.  Starting in September 2014, all schools will have the opportunity to spend Operational Days collaborating with fellow teachers instead of spending these days in less efficient staff meetings and small sessions.

“A common calendar will give teachers across the division more time to work together to ensure that every student in our division is given the same quality education,” said Board Chair Dianne Arcand-Lavoie.  “We want to ensure that the students in our smaller schools are getting the same education as the students in our larger schools and this common calendar is a giant step toward that goal.”

Since HFCRD transportation is provided by three different school divisions, a common calendar had never before been considered.  This new calendar comes at the small cost of approximately $6000.

“We want to give our teachers the time they need to perform the best in their roles.  In order to do that, we needed to either hire more teachers or increase collaboration time,” said Superintendent Betty Turpin.  “Adapting a common calendar is the more economical option, but it still gives us the same result.  A common calendar will give our teachers the collaboration time they need to continuously improve their teaching strategies and make them more confident in their assessment practices.”
