By-Election Called in Ward 1 High Prairie, Nomination Day Set for Thursday November 12th

  Posted: October 30, 2020

At the October 19th Regular Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to call a by-election in Ward 1 High Prairie. The vote came after the recent passing of long-time dedicated Trustee Carmelle Lizee. Nomination Day has been set for Thursday November 12, 2020. Interested candidates are encouraged to obtain nomination papers here and contact HFCRD Returning Officer Nick Masvikeni for further information. Candidates must submit their completed nomination forms to the HFCRD Central Office in Peace River (10307 – 99 St) or St. Andrew’s School in High Prairie (4617 – 53 Ave) anytime before noon on Nomination Day (Thursday November 12, 2020).

“Trustee Lizee will be greatly missed at our Board table. She cared deeply for St. Andrew’s School, and we know she would want us to ensure that St. Andrew’s is represented at the Board table. We encourage all stakeholders to consider representing the St. Andrew’s School community through Catholic School Trusteeship.  Having a voice for the High Prairie Catholic community at the Board table is vital,” said Board Chair Kelly Whalen.  “My time as a Trustee has been very rewarding and I am confident this journey will be rewarding for the next Ward 1 Trustee as well.”

In order to be eligible for the nomination, candidates must be eligible to vote in the election, be Catholic, be a resident of Ward 1 (High Prairie and surrounding areas) for six consecutive months, and not be otherwise ineligible or disqualified (as outlined in Sections 22, and 23 of the Local Authorities Election Act).

If more than one candidate comes forward, Election Day will be Thursday December 10, 2020.  In the event that only one candidate comes forward on Nomination Day, that candidate will be acclaimed as the Ward 1 Trustee. In the event that no candidates come forward, nominations will re-open the day following Nomination Day from 10:00am – 12:00pm and will remain open for five business days or until a candidate comes forward.

All interested candidates are encouraged to call Returning Officer Nick Masvikeni at the HFCRD Central Office at (780) 624 – 3956 to have any questions answered. Printed nomination packages can be made available upon request.
