New Grimshaw Schools Announced Today
Posted: December 12, 2013
It’s official and plans are now underway – Grimshaw Jr. Sr. High, Kennedy Elementary and Holy Family schools will have a new home by fall 2017. An exciting partnership between The Town of Grimshaw, Peace River School Division (PRSD) and Holy Family Catholic Regional Division (HFCRD) will see two schools attached to the Mile Zero Multiplex by September 2017. Actual construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2015.
Education Minister Jeff Johnson officially announced the project launch alongside Infrastructure Minister Wayne Drysdale and MLA Hector Goudreau earlier this morning. Students and staff from the three schools, trustees, Town of Grimshaw representatives, school division officials and community members celebrated the news.
The government confirmed a building project to build a kindergarten to grade twelve school for PRSD with a maximum capacity of 550 students and a kindergarten to grade nine school for HFCRD with a maximum capacity of 350 students. The project allows for opportunities to share space and provide increased options for students and the community. It will allow both jurisdictions better access to specialized programs while increasing the utilization of existing town infrastructure.
The project officially started by way of a project start up meeting that took place on December 10, 2013. Representatives from Alberta Education, Alberta Infrastructure, the Town of Grimshaw, HFCRD and PRSD met to discuss preliminary plans. Actual construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2015.
“We are so pleased with today’s announcement,” said HFCRD Board Chair Dianne Arcand-Lavoie. “We are looking forward to the design phase and working with our partners to ensure the unique identities of both schools are well represented within the schools themselves. We want our stakeholders to know that our board and staff will ensure that our Catholicity is always our top priority.”
A next step in the process includes a plan for school boards and town representatives to tour schools in the province that share a similar partnership. Members from the Town of Grimshaw, PRSD and HFCRD will work closely with Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure through a design committee and a working committee. Providing opportunities to share space and resources while honouring the unique identity of both schools is an important part of the design process.
The Holy Family Catholic Regional Division invites all members of our Grimshaw school community to an informational meeting on Monday January 13th at 6:30pm at Holy Family School. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the upcoming construction phases and answer any questions.
